Web 2.0

April 7th, 2007 by jhg20003

Ok so I agreed with alot Mr O’Reilly had to say. He is very explicit with the inforation he provided and for the most part i think he is right. Just one thing I dont agree that Microsoft is not going to be able to beat Google out in its desktop. I am all for the user based products, things we can im,prove and be made better the more we use it. MS though is now starting to take on that concept the articlew was describing. The article is now some time old and since MS has gone to a user freidnly enviorment with it’s code. MS has realized that when the poeple who gathered to decide web 2.0 decide to meet and create web 3.0 in order to stay afloat this is something necessary. It is now hard to survive on the web and all the code outthere availble if it is usefull it is being baught by MS. Take for example a product that was named lookout for outlook, it was a free tool which helped search through your inbox at lighting speed. two years ago it was a free tool that was being developed and helped along by its users. This technology has since been purchased and incorporated into the new vista program. It is no longer free. Anywyas this is just one example, another exmaple Linux, this is a free develpper software that is available for software but if you wnat support you must purchase the over lay which is Red Hat. This as well is free untill you need support. Although alot of usefull technologies are availble the fact that someone always has to make some money off it will determine exactly ow long the product will remain free. The more usefull the product the dfaster people will try to come out with something patened for it. I am all for the movement of web 3.0 if it happens but i dont think that will happen untill Ms is completly disasembled.

    Jesus,

I need to pick on someone to make sure posting comments is working – but it doesn’t mean everyone’s is anyway.
While I am not a fan of Microsoft, I don’t see Web 2.0 quite the battle between MS and Google. If so I sense that Google is way ahead at this point for they realized long ago that everything was going to the web (applications, etc.) and MS is just now realizing that.

There is a concept called the “long tail” which describes (on a graph) how only about 10% of the companies on the web are the MS type large companies, while 90% now represent the smaller more service oriented companies - the web 2.0 companies. They are approaching from a different economic model whereby you build a good product and if people really like it and use it and it becomes indepensible to people, then it becomes a target for a company to take it over and grow it. Such was the case for YouTube. Only difference is the Web 2.0 company doesn’t try to change what was already working, nor start charging for the service! There are lots of such examples today.

Ok man - why are you going on about Google and MS battle? Bottom line I think that is comparing apples to oranges. These two companies have a different business approach and it shows. MS is realizing it needs to change - google as been google all along and continues to morph as needed.

Now I am not a fan of either of these two companies but realize that there is need to both of them (to some extent.) I dislike Google Tool Bar and MS? Well let’s just say I own an iBook for a reason. (LOL)

I don’t know that much about code (yet) but I hope to very soon, so I can’t comment on that.

What else struck your fancy about O’Reilly’s article? Just curious - Hiram
